Birds & Books.

Good afternoon, everyone!

Today we are not going to be working on language itself, but on English culture, particularly literature. First of all, try to guess who's the person represented in the image down below. Any guesses? Pay attention to the bird and the title, as they are a clear giveaway!

Have you guessed it yet?

Okayyy, let's start. The person represented down below is a character created by Edgar Allan Poe (I sort of made it look like him to give you a clue), an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He belongs to a literary movement called Romanticism and he is recognised as the inventor of the detective fiction genre as well as a contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. In particular, the strip represents a comical interpretation of his famous poem The Raven.

After this brief contextualization and before looking up what is happening online, make an interpretation of the illustration below. Why is there a crow looking sarcastically at the viewer, as if it was on The Office? What could Nevermore possibly mean?

Then, take a story from one of your favourite English writers and create a strip based on it. It can be a literal interpretation, comical, satirical, etc. Why have you chosen it?

Hope you have a nice weekend and we will discuss all of this in class next week,
Andrea
